In April of 2020, Tom Schueman, PBA Founder, was teaching at the Naval Academy. In a one month period, three of his Marines from a 2010 deployment to Afghanistan died by suicide. It raised the question, 'I would do anything to keep my troops alive overseas, what am I doing on the Homefront?'
His answer was, "Not enough."
Patrol Base Abbate is a space for ALL veterans, active duty, reservists and guards to find community and rediscover their purpose around shared interests in order to promote mental health and foster resilience. By placing no barriers to entry, we aim to facilitate the leading protective factors against suicide. First and foremost, we get our members into meaningful community so they never find themselves in crisis.
Research shows that combat experience and deployments are not prerequisites to suicide. In fact, the data proves the opposite; suicide does not discriminate by the circumstances of one's service.
Patrol Base Abbate engages with its members via interest based clubs with aims to scale into thriving local chapters across the country. Through these avenues, PBA members participate in Return To Base programs at their ranch in Montana, pursuing their interests and hobbies in the community of fellows who share similar passions with wellness, resilience, and purpose workshops built in. This high fidelity, immersive experience has a proven record of sustained improvement to mental health outcomes and protective factors. PBA local chapters see our members engaging in their home towns, building strong community, and purposefully serving beyond self.
